A universal motto of resilience, that changes the narrative, and is a force for liberating our community.
People from all ethnicities and cultures use the "DO FOR SELF" mantra as a call for self-determination and a rally cry for their communities to work together. It's a call where we want for our brother and sister what we want for ourselves. And it is under this banner of "DO FOR SELF" that we help one another achieve success.
Do For Self does not necessarily mean that you have to physically do the work alone. You may not be able to all things by yourself. In fact, it is through teaching others, reaching out to consultants, getting advice from mentors, or even modeling success through tribulations as seem through the lens of African American people. All of these approaches will be honoring the concept of Do For Self.
Do For Self can be seen as a way of accomplishing the things you want to complete. It could be calling others that are able to do the heavy lifting or having the foresight to work with those that have the expertise to get the job done. I certainly needed concrete specialists to finish my sidewalk work, and I can think of no greater examples for us to share than taking a close look at Black history as a model for all people to study to fully understand and appreciate what it means to be resilient against the odds.
